Network of Nations News
As you
probably know, the students are back at NIU for the 2010-2011 academic year.
Hundreds of these students are from other countries. They leave their homes and
the comfort of their communities and travel long distances to the exotic
destination of DeKalb, Illinois, to further their education. Many of these
students come from situations in which they’ve never had opportunities to hear
about Jesus. They do not know the Peace that surpasses all understanding. The
majority of the international students have no friends here; they are on their
own, without family or the comfort of a friendly face.
That is where the Network of Nations starts to work. Each Friday,
we provide a simple meal with the help of local church groups. St. John’s date is September 17. This
evening becomes an opportunity for the international students to leave their
rooms, meet with others, share a meal and practice English and learn about
American culture. For many who participate, the Intercultural Café becomes one
of the most enjoyable events of the week.
We have several families that are bringing soups and salads, but I
have zero desserts! Please help St. John sponsor this event by signing up to
bring a dessert to our church before 5pm on September 17. If you can find the
time to bake or buy a dozen cookies, we desperately need them! I will pick up
the dessert donations before the Intercultural Café that evening, but all are
welcome! You can find the Dessert Sign Up on the table in the Narthex. The Café
meets at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 511 Russell Road, DeKalb. Please help us
bring Christ to the Internationals by signing up or bringing dessert! Sissy Ziech 815-757-8655 or

“Network of Nations” Dinner, October 3, 2010
The Network of Nations organization has asked St. John’s to host their annual meeting and fundraising event (10th annual) again. The event will be held on Sunday evening, October 3, 2010.
We are planning a buffet dinner for 200 guests starting with:
4:45 - 5:15 pm Registration
5:15 - 5:30 pm Seating of guests and prayer
5:30 - 6:00 pm Buffet Dinner
6:00 - 6:50 pm Program
6:50 - 7:10 pm Buffet Desserts, Pledging, & Entertainment
7:10 - 8:30 pm Take down & clean up
This is a fast track event with a close schedule. Last year’s event went extremely will and was very successful.
We will be putting out signup sheets for the various duties to be performed that evening. This is a major fund raising event for St. John’s and its ministries and organizations and it is also an enjoyable evening.
Sign up sheets will be on the wall opposite the display cases.
