LADIES OF ST JOHN I'm inviting you to join me for a new Women's Bible Study on Sunday mornings. We will be reading Pastor Matthew Harrison's book, Christ Have Mercy. In his book Pastor Harrison encourages us to seek opportunities to show Christ's mercy to each other and those around us. He draws on his own experience as a pastor and Director of LCMS World Relief and Human Care as well as Scripture and the writings of the Lutheran Church Fathers. We will meet every other Sunday starting September 25th. This is to accommodate my work schedule. A signup sheet is in the Narthex, by the bulletin board across from the display case. Please join me for this enlightening study. It will help us to live out our life of faith as Christ our Savior called us to live, showing mercy, love, and forgiveness to our neighbors.
STEWARDSHIP SERIES “Managing God’s Gifts” – Today begins a series of four sermons focusing on the blessing of managing the gifts God gives to us. Today’s Sermon focuses on “Managing God’s Gift of the World.” The rest of the series will be as follows:
September 10 and 11 – “Managing God’s Gift of Other People”
September 17 and 18 – “Managing God’s Gift of Time”
September 24 and 25 – “Managing God’s Gift of Money”
We pray God’s blessing upon our stewarding of His gifts.
DISCIPLE OF CHRIST CLASS Beginning Sunday, September 18 at 7:00 we will begin another series of classes to introduce our Lutheran Christian faith to new people or to give our long term members a chance to refresh the basics of our faith. The classes will last exactly 90 minutes and will continue for 10 weeks. Everyone is invited. Please confirm with Pastor Weinhold your attendance. Thank you.
FOOD FOR THE POOR MISSION TRIP Pastor Weinhold will be leaving Monday September 12 and will return on Friday the 16th from a mission trip with Food for the Poor in Haiti. We will be touring a new housing site that is being supported by a coalition of LC-MS congregations. As usual I will be taking an extra suitcase to be filled by members of the congregation. Items to bring are as follows:
* Soccer balls (and pumps)
* School supplies
* Toiletries (hygiene kits are always fantastic: individual Ziploc bags \illed with travel-sized shampoo, conditioner, lotion,
toothpaste and toothbrush, a bar of soap, chapstick, etc.)
* Boys and girls toys (dolls, small planes, cars, Frisbees)
* New or very gently worn clothes, shoes and hats (please ask yourself if it is something you or your child could proudly
* No Food, please
Next week we will take a freewill offering if you would like to make a cash donation towards the purchase of items. Please bring the items up to church by Wednesday September 7. Thank you for your support. October will have Food for the Poor as our mission. We will also have a guest pastor from Food for the Poor preach on the 2nd weekend of October.
BIBLE SALE Concordia Publishing is having their annual Bible sale. Information on the Bible sale available on the announcement board in the narthex.
CONGREGATIONAL TIME OF LISTENING On Sunday, August 28th we will be having three of our members at St. John's sharing their responses to three questions. The questions are:
Why is ministry to children important to me?
Why is regular Bible study important to me?
Why is regular worship attendance important to me?
Each answer will take \ive minutes. We strongly encourage everyone to stay for the time following the service as we continue to listen to each other.
CONVENTION RESOLUTIONS On July 14 the Synodical Convention came to a close in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Over the next few weeks we will be making available copies of resolutions that were passed by the Convention. This weekend copies of a resolution
entitled, “To address questions in reference to the Sacrament of the Altar” is available in the narthex. We will be discussing these resolutions in the fall during Bible study times after we complete our study of the book of Revelation. Please contact Pastor Weinhold if you have any questions.
